“I Don’t Like To Do ANYTHING For Four Hours!”

Once again I settled in with a couple of the young spuds from my team to watch some Pro Football on Sunday. The game we watched was competitive, and it kept the kid’s interest most of the time. However, it was the commercials that inspired the most questions from the youngsters.

I’ve got to tell you, it’s a little nerve-racking to field questions from seven and eight year olds about the benefits of “performance enhancing drugs”. “Why are they sitting in tubs outside? Don’t they have a house?” “What do they mean ‘when the mood strikes them’? Does that mean they want to take a bath?” My favorite was not a question, but a comment – “I don’t like to do ANYTHING for four hours!” On that point, I had to agree with him!

Is it possible that maybe the people in charge of broadcasting sporting events during the afternoon could be a little more discerning in their advertising? It’s not like this is Monday Night Football at 9:00 pm, it’s midday on a Sunday. If the NFL is truly interested in promoting a family product, perhaps during the daytime broadcasts they could convince the networks to steer clear of the drugs and alcohol. Maybe I’m just getting old – what do you think?
